Small Group

I am a product of small groups--that is, I grew more in my walk with God through having a TEAM with me in this walk.  But I made a mistake, huge mistake of making a god out of my small group. I did not realize I started to have unrealistic expectations. I wanted control.  I felt entitled. And when I did not get my expectations, I crumbled...stayed away and finally, stepped into a 2-year lone journey of my walk with Christ.  Oh, don't be mistaken.  God never left me.  But the journey was more difficult because I was alone.  No more did I hear encouraging voices, no more was a sister who helped carry the other end of my baggage.

And the ember.  The ember slowly died down as it stood alone, away from the group of ember sticking together, creating and sustaining fire.

I did not immediately realize all of this.  I thought I was fine, attending Church on my own, faithfully having quiet time.  But really, I started cooling down.  The voices of the world were way louder now.  And I found myself mirroring their language, I found myself easily irritated, and when I spoke or reacted in a way that is different than how God commanded us to respond and interact with people, i knew something was definitely wrong.  After all, out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

And this post that I made in Instagram pretty much sums up what happened to me when I became cool towards God.

I did not know how to start getting back to the right path.  Maybe I knew, but for some reason, life always gets in the way...and I just couldn't get started.  I kept putting it off, and before I knew it, there were two whole years of a cold spiritual journey.

God knew I am so going to need help.  And today was the day He initiated a move.

I went to catch up with old friends...sisters-in-Christ at work.  It was an ordinary catch up, and i wasn't really looking forward to it because remember my heart was cold and I didn't have any interest in another small group meeting.  I went anyway.

We met at 9ish in the morning and left Coffee Bean at 9ish in the evening.  L.A. shared her struggles with her own spiritual family.  Lyt talked about her own share of spiritual family challenges.  And I was like, wait, what? We were going through the same thing and we did not know about it?  So the stories poured...we talked about our feelings, our assumptions, the consequences, our positions.

And we all realized...the enemy has wreaked havoc in our lives long enough.  It's time to get back up and fight back.   We did not know how...but we started with what we know how.
Commit a time with God everyday... and cover each other with prayers.

We started a group chat in Facebook, just the three of us. We called it SHOFAR--a hebrew word meaning trumpet.  In the Old Testament, the people of God start their battles by sounding the trumpet.  And that's what we are doing.  We confessed our sins to each other and shared every revelation from God.  By August of this year, we saw how faithful God is!  We may not be 'there' yet, but He met us faithfully in those few minutes that we dedicated to Him.  We read a word here, and then see how relevant that Word was going to be later that day.  And God just kept revealing.  He kept meeting us, I swear I would have imagined Him waiting in that spot by Himself even if neither of us shows up.

The mountains to climb are still high...but one thing's for sure.  God will never leave us even in the low mountains.  He never judges us or plants grudges against us for leaving Him in this walk.  In fact, He is forever working, forever restoring us no matter how often we pull away.

The lady on the right is not part of the Shofar sisters.  She is another friend we always invite to our meetings.

Skype Small Group

For as long as Jesus is the King over our household, we will never crumble.  Family Skype Prayer no matter how oceans apart we are is one of the great things in this life.

What makes me busy

Today, as I relish my day off, I realize that my facebook and internet activities are ABOUT the things that I value in my life.

God
Family
Relatives
Small group
Girlfriends
Kids Church
Education

These are where my time and energy and resources mostly go.  Not via facebook literally, hehe.

So when there's an invitation that's not part of this list, they go to the bottom of my priorities.  If an office mate would invite me to watch movies after work on a Saturday, I remember my nephew Nate who stays with us during the weekends and how I only have four opportunities in one month to build a relationship with him.

Or if cliques from high school would meet up for a drink on a night when I don't have to go anywhere, I imagine the expenses that can buy dinner for the family instead or that can buy something for a lonely tita that I care about.

See,  there are things that I don't do in order to do well what I need to do.

We only have one life, 16 waking hours, two day off's a week and two paydays in a month.
And we would want to make the most of it.

What, get a life?

I am.

This is my life: God, my loved-ones, my dreams.  These make me happy.  To live a life dedicated to building relationships within my ability and magnify Jesus' Name in stewardship and relationships.  And until He tells me to come and jump off the boat to a greater territory and greater responsibility, this is where I'm staying.

Maxine's Scrapbook Partea

Marianne's unica hija is celebrating her 12th birthday.

She wants Maxine to be surrounded with mighty women of God and be given words of wisdom as she prepares for teenage years.  So Marianne rounded up the small group and invited Maxine along just like old times.

She didn't tell her that it's not just going to be a small group session. Winks!

We had lunch at Mcdo first and did our small group session there

Van printed some of Maxine's facebook pictures

We chose the picture that will symbolize our advice for her.

I chose Max's pic with her mom and dad and encouraged her to always cherish her family even during impatient moments.

I like Charmaine's picture (bottom-center)  She gave an advice to Max to always keep her feet on the ground. :)

We didn't expect Maxine's eyes will sweat. :)

Maxine and me.

Ps. I'm so craaazy about Chatime!

The gift of Small Group

I praise God for how our small group evolved! We're no longer contained in that mini table in a cramped starbucks. A small group friend is indeed a lifetime gift. We don't cherish that gift by polishing it with an attendance. We cherish not the session but the person--

  • being interested in the going-on's of her life
  • rejoicing when it's time to rejoice
  • mourning when it's time to mourn
  • rebuking in love
  • ..but would rather win the person and not the argument
  • building her up enthusiastically
  • encouraging her dreams
  • ..and especially who she is in Christ
  • and at the end of the day talking to God about her.

In other words, RELATIONSHIP. :).

I'm a product of small groups.  The existence of a spiritual family in my life puts me in a strong current that leads to God.  It becomes the trend in my life. It feeds the majority of my brains with the things of God. It's my training ground and my relaxing ground.  Because the battlefield is really outside the Church. In fact,I can't imagine how many times I have come crawling back to my small group--wounded, torn, shaken, confused and discouraged. In life there's only one thing that we need to remember to fight a good fight and keep the faith: who God is.

But we all always forget.

That's why I am so thankful that this group is strategically placed in my life by God to regularly remind me of who He is.

There's really nothing magical about this group. We may be just a bunch of ladies who care about each other just like any other groups out there, sure.

But one thing, one very important thing holds us up together. And that's Christ Himself.

Apart from Him, we'd crumble as easily as a piece of Polvoron dropped on the floor.

So if you currently have a small group, cherish them, love them, they are a beautiful gift from God.

If you do not have a small group yet, I encourage you to pray to God for it. Community is God's idea. And when it's His idea I guarantee you that there are plans and promises that He will bring forth through it. :)

"And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near."
Hebrews 10:25

Gen, Tin and Tats' Birthday dinner

I always relish being with my small group.  This evening was filled with tons and tons of laughter as we played Unspeakable.

Happy birthday Gen, Tin and Tats!

Effort to write birthday wishes under the table

Super fun!

They didn't mean to do this at the same time hehe

Salie and J.D.

Through the life of this friend of mine, I am witnessing how God works all things for those who love Him.  I am seeing how God does not abandon them (see my blog before about Salie and J.D.)...how He is patient and gentle and forgiving and generous.

It's hard to feel God's presence during difficulties. We hurl complaints and grumblings at Him, either vocally or deep inside our hearts. But look at this God! He is so patient, gentle, forgiving, generous--wait I just said that, didn't I? Haha, oooh how I worship this Lord!

To Jesus:  Lord, J.D. is so handsome, thank You Lord for him! I pray that you don't let our corrupt generation influence him.  Please let J.D. be Yours and Yours alone. Amen.

To Salie: You may have taken on such a difficult path, sweetie.  But as long as you don't push away the Hand that guides you, hems you in, provides for you and protects you...you will be alright.

To JD: Baby, do you know what kind of dad you have? Read below (when you're older hehe)

Father to the fatherless, defender of widows—
this is God, whose dwelling is holy. - Psalm 68:5

And do you know what your Dad wants to tell you?

So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. - Isaiah 41:10

Crazy Love!!!

Woohoo! I finally got the book! The bookstores here in the Philippines couldn't have this for a very long time.

I heard about this book from one of the blogs i enjoy reading.

YAHUU!

And oh, if you're wondering why I don't seem too happy in this pic it's because I reserved two for me and my mentor, Vanessa. But she got a hold of both books first and paid for them.

She paid for my gift for her, argggh! So our other friend Charm took a picture of me to show Van that I'm not too happy that my cute intentions flopped (hehe this is what you do when you have so much time and nothing to do)

I have to think of another one to give her just to let her know how much she's appreciated.

Anyhoo, I can't wait to read this!!!

Mighty display of faith

The girl in the picture passes by that CRV on her way to church almost every sunday.

She prays (and yes lays hand on it) that the owner would be blessed

with a better car so that the one in the picture will be hers. :D

Van's prayer and Doc Gen's car
I will go back to this post as soon as God answers this prayer (expectant!) :)

Feast after Fast

We have corporate prayer and fasting in our local church every start of the year.

After the 12 day-fasting, my small group and I met at Yanyan's house to share what God revealed to us or what we're believing God for during our p&f week.  I didn't finish mine because I simply failed. I will blog about how God is faithful even if I was faithless (He answered a biggie prayer of mine, woohoo!)

I always have a great time with my small group. It's like a barracks for me. I get recharged and encouraged to go out to the battlefield.

Thank You Lord for this wonderful team!
